Etching is a very old technique. I learned about it through a swiss workshop: Le Poisson Bouge. They then in turn sponsored me to open a non profit workshop in Nazareth and start teaching people. This is how Inky Corner was born and how we started teaching etching and printing right before COVID started!!!

In our workshop, we start with zinc plates that we cover with a varnish or ground.
Dans notre atelier, nous partons de plaques de zinc que nous recouvrons de vernis.
في ورشة العمل الخاصة بنا ، نبدأ باستعمال ألواح الزنك التي نغطيها بالورنيش (שעווה).

The actual etching is made on the varnish with a sharp point.
La gravure se fait sur le vernis avec une pointe.
يتم النقش على الورنيش (שעווה) باستعمال أداة حادة.
החריטה נעשית על הלכה עם מחט.

The etched plate is then immersed in acid. The acid is etching the zinc. Then the varnish is removed.
La plaque gravée est ensuite trempée dans l’acide. C’est l’acide qui grave le zinc. On enlève ensuite le vernis.
ثم يتم غمس لوح الزنك المنقوش في الحمض. الحمض يبدا حفر الزنك. بعد ذلك نقوم بإزالة الورنيش
סמים הלוח בחומצה. החומצה היא זו שצורבת את האבץ. לאחר מכן מנקים את הלכה.

The zinc plate is inked and wiped so the ink stays only in the etched lines and surfaces.
La plaque de zinc est encrée et essuyée pour que l'encre ne reste que dans les lignes et les surfaces gravées.
لوحة الزنك محبرة وممسحة بحيث يبقى الحبر فقط في الخطوط والأسطح المحفورة.
סמים דיו על הלוח ונגבים את המשטח של הלוח. ככה הדיו נשאר רק בחוטים ומקומות חקוקים

And finally we print the plate by passing the plate and damp paper through the printing press.
Finalement, on imprime la plaque en la passant dans la presse recouverte d'un papier humide.
وأخيرًا نقوم بطباعة اللوح عن طريق تمرير اللوحة المغطاة بورق رطب من خلال آلة الطباعة.
ובסוף אנו מדפיסים את הלוח. עוברים את הלוח ונייר רטוב בתוך מכונת דפוס.

The paper is peeled from the plate and the etching is printed.
Le papier est délicatement enlevé de la plaque et la gravure est ainsi imprimée.
